Our Independence Day and Kharkiv project celebrati Our Independence Day and Kharkiv project celebrations, modest, not flashy, but loud in respect for those who fought and keep fighting for the freedom and independence, full of gratitude to every single person in the room for showing up to volunteer, to help, and to contribute to the independence of Ukraine constantly. Whether you are an experienced runner or simply enjoy being active, the most important thing in this event is not the result, but coming together and running for a meaningful cause. Living in different parts of the world, we will once again demonstrate that we are one strong global Lithuanian community.🏅 The number of medals is limited, so we encourage early registration. Over the week, our young footballers and coaches Over the week, our young footballers and coaches from Kharkiv experienced an incredibly busy programme of sport, learning, culture and friendship across Leeds, Yorkshire and Manchester. We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped organising all activities! A special thank you to @teneta_ua - the only camouflage net weaving club in Leeds and a truly unique place where Ukrainians of all generations come together to support Ukraine by weaving nets and doing Ukrainian activities - @teneta_ua and the best Foodball Mafia lead @blimey202 Thank you for organising an unforgettable evening of friendship and reflective space for the team! 🏙 Leeds City Tour Thank you to Ben Hopwood @benh0pw00d for bringing the history and stories of Leeds to life during a wonderful guided walking tour. 🏰 Royal Armouries Museum @royalarmouriesmuseum Thank you to Cat Stiles and the museum team for an incredible day exploring history through interactive experiences, exhibitions and demonstrations. Among the exhibition’s special displays will be a collection of Lithuanian photographer M. Vaišnoras photographs from Ukrainian cities that, after everything they have endured, will never look the same again, captured with unique film camera. The exhibition will also feature art displays by @beata_kurkul , adding another personal and emotional perspective on the experience of war and its impact on people and places. Visitors will be able to explore incredible objects and unique displays brought directly from the frontlines of Ukraine, with special items connected to the stories and photographs. Selected items will also be available to purchase, allowing visitors to take home a meaningful piece of the exhibition while supporting humanitarian work for Ukraine. Did you know that before the war hiking and walkin Did you know that before the war hiking and walking through forest and natural areas were popular in Kharkiv. The surrounding landscape is largely steppe, so open woodland and forest paths were very liked by locals You didn’t have to leave the city to get into nature. Kharkiv was one of Ukraine’s greenest major cities. Large forest and park areas were woven into the city, giving residents plenty of places to walk, cycle, run and spend time outdoors. However due to the safety concerns, outdoor activities in groups are very restricted at the moment, it was wonderful to see the team and our volunteers enjoying the hike and Peak District views 🥹 norther England does reassemble Ukraine in some of the regions, and it was lovely to see everyone being able to do things they love in a safe and peaceful environment 🇺🇦🫶🏼🇬🇧
Before the boys headed home, we gathered together Before the boys headed home, we gathered together for one very special final moment. With many of the wonderful volunteers who had been part of the journey throughout the week joining us, we reflected on everything we had experienced together the football, the adventures, the laughter, the new friendships and all the little moments that made this exchange so special. We exchanged speeches, shared memories, thanked one another, and presented the boys with their Cultural Exchange Certificates to take home as a little reminder of their time with us here in Leeds. We are incredibly grateful that we had the opportunity to welcome these amazing young people from Kharkiv, share our city and culture with them, and create memories that we hope they will carry with them for a long time. ❤️ This is just a little final snippet from our final day, but we have SO much more to share! 👀 @big_c_nomad wonderful keyrings that he has engraved himself for the boys were absolutely amazing! Over the coming days, we’ll be taking you behind the scenes of the whole exchange from the activities and football sessions to the places we discovered, the food we enjoyed together, the funniest moments and all the memories that made this week unforgettable. ❤️🇺🇦
KHARKIV → LEEDS DIARY DAY 7: THE FINAL DAY 💔 And KHARKIV → LEEDS DIARY DAY 7: THE FINAL DAY 💔 And just like that… our incredible week with the boys from Kharkiv came to an end. 🥹 Our final morning in Leeds started at @trinityleeds , where the boys had one last chance to pick up a few things for their families and friends back home. Then we all came together in the lobby at @unipolhousing for a very special little get-together. This will have a seperate post as it deserves a place on your feeds and hearts ❤️ Then it was time to hit the road. One last car journey together, one last round of KitKats from the petrol station 😂🍫, and one last chance to laugh together before saying goodbye. We made our way to Manchester Airport, where all 17 team members and @b_enedett_o were warmly welcomed by the wonderful @jet2pics . ✈️The staff were absolutely lovely, greeting us with such kindness and helping us with everything we needed to make the journey home as smooth as possible. Once all the suitcases were checked in, tickets sorted and everything was ready… it was time for the boys to go through security. Goodbyes were incredibly emotional. After seven days of football, adventures, laughter, hikes, training sessions, new friendships and countless unforgettable moments, these boys became so much more than just a team visiting Leeds. They became our friends. Our little football family. 🇺🇦🤝🇬🇧🤝🇱🇹 We already know they made it safely to Kraków, and it makes our hearts happy knowing they are back on their journey home. ❤️ But this isn’t goodbye forever. We can’t wait to see them again very, very soon when we make our way to Kharkiv ourselves. 🇺🇦 Until then, boys… take care, keep playing, keep dreaming, keep smiling. Leeds will always have a place for you. 💙💛 Thank you to all our drivers and volunteers who helped on the final day, @veronika__sirko and @atarantul not only helped and planned and supported this entire project but stayed late to help with cleaning and everything else after the boys left! KHARKIV- LEEDS DIARY DAY 5: Day full of unforgett KHARKIV- LEEDS DIARY DAY 5: Day full of unforgettable experiences! 🤩 Our morning started with an incredible visit to the @royalarmouriesmuseum , where the boys explored fascinating exhibitions, met horse riders, enjoyed interactive museum activities, discovered the story of Genghis Khan, and learned so much from the fantastic Royal Armouries’ guide Cat. A delicious lunch made the visit even more special. In the afternoon, we visited the Leeds branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, where @atarantul shared the history of the building and explained why Ukrainian community centres like this play such an important role in supporting Ukraine and Ukrainians. After that, our wonderful @teneta_ua volunteers, led by @blimey202 , organised a fun game of Football Mafia, followed by a delicious Ukrainian dinner with borscht and varenyky made by @sv_aleksasha, Nataliia, Olena. We finished the day at Castleford Stadium, enjoying an exciting rugby match between Castleford and Hull. The atmosphere has been amazing, and now we’re waiting to see who takes the win! 🏉💙💛 Thank you to our drivers @big_c_nomad Roman and John! And translator @band_rabura
KHARKIV - LEEDS DIARY DAY 4: Another brilliant day KHARKIV - LEEDS DIARY DAY 4: Another brilliant day full of football! We started the day with a visit to the National Football Museum in Manchester, where the boys explored the history of football, saw incredible trophies, and discovered how the beautiful game has evolved over the years. Next came an unforgettable training session at the Manchester Football Academy. The boys had the chance to learn from highly experienced coaches of Manchester City. That was a fantastic opportunity to develop their skills. Before heading home, we made one final stop at the Manchester City Store, where everyone enjoyed picking out souvenirs to remember the trip. After a busy and exciting day, we returned home for a well-deserved dinner, already looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures! Thank you to all incredible volunteers who have started their day early morning and haven’t even finished as they’re on the way back to Leeds! Managing and coordinating the day as per usual @veronika__sirko and @atarantul, driving and helping with the day @big_c_nomad @_ash_wilson @benbr111! This is more than a celebration it’s an opportunity to stand with Ukraine and make a real difference. Every penny raised from this event will go directly towards funding the autonomous evacuation robot “Maul” for the CCO (Сили спеціальних операці) 3rd assault brigade, helping save the lives of wounded defenders on the front line. Your ticket includes a relaxed buffet-style evening with a selection of food, including sandwiches, fresh salads, snacks, and refreshments. If the weather is kind to us, we’ll make the most of the summer evening by celebrating outdoors. We will have Ukrainian quizzes and prizes for the winners! Together, we’ll honour Ukraine’s journey to independence while continuing to support those fighting to protect it today. Bring your family, friends, and anyone who wants to stand with Ukraine. Every ticket purchased helps provide life-saving support and shows that our community remains united in its commitment to freedom. Let’s celebrate. Let’s remember. KHARKIV-LEEDS DIARY DAY 3: Day full of unforgetta KHARKIV-LEEDS DIARY DAY 3: Day full of unforgettable memories! We started the day with a mesmerising match against Leeds United and our boys came away with an overwhelming 5:2 victory! They showed great teamwork, determination and spirit throughout the game. Special thank you to @brian_deane for the motivational and inspiring speech and advice before the match! After the match, we headed to the beautiful village of Otley, where we enjoyed a relaxing walk, tasted authentic homemade pizza and even experienced a bit of the famous changing local weather, which gave us an opportunity to enjoy some tea and coffee in a local cafe. To finish the day, we stopped by the Leeds United Store, where the boys had the chance to pick up souvenirs to remember this incredible trip and their victory. Thank you to the dedicated team who ensured that everything went smoothly! KHARKIV - LEEDS DAIRY DAY 2: The boys kicked off KHARKIV - LEEDS DAIRY DAY 2: The boys kicked off the day with an incredible training session at Leeds United. They absolutely loved it! A huge thank you to the coaches and everyone at @leedsunited for making them feel so welcome. Next, they explored the hidden side of @leedslibraries (Central Library and gallery), discovering its history, fascinating stories and even getting exclusive behind-the-scenes access to areas usually closed to the public. After dinner, it was time to have some fun at @pixelbarleeds, where the boys enjoyed an evening packed with Xbox, PlayStation and plenty of friendly competition. They had been waiting for it since Sunday! Thank you to our incredible team who volunteered toat th logistics, interpreting, organisation and driving @veronika__sirko @atarantul @glebius_berg @band_rabura @viacheslav.semeniuk @natalie_wells_russell13 ——— ХАРКІВ — ЛІДС. ДЕНЬ 2 🇺🇦🇬🇧 Хлопці розпочали день із неймовірного тренування в Leeds United. Вони були у захваті! Щиро дякуємо тренерам і всій команді @leedsunited за такий теплий прийом і незабутні враження. Далі на них чекало знайомство з прихованими куточками @leedslibraries (Центральної бібліотеки та художньої галереї), де вони відкрили для себе її історію, почули захопливі розповіді та навіть отримали ексклюзивний доступ до приміщень, які зазвичай закриті для відвідувачів. We had such a wonderful day celebrating together, creating memories, and proudly representing Ukraine and our Eastern European community. For us, being part of events like Leeds Pride is about so much more than simply marching. It is about integration, solidarity, and belonging. It is about becoming an active part of the communities we live in, supporting one another, and standing alongside movements that fight for equality, dignity, freedom, and human rights for everyone. We are incredibly proud to show that Ukraine is a European country open, diverse, welcoming, and united by the same values of freedom and equality. By coming together and taking part in important community events like Pride, we have the opportunity to build bridges, challenge stereotypes, and show the world the Ukraine we know and love. A huge thank you to Leeds for once again welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to be part of such an important celebration. We were honoured to march on our float in collaboration with Ukraine Pride, proudly representing and advocating for the LGBTQ+ community in Ukraine. At a time when equality, dignity, and human rights continue to be fought for, standing together in solidarity means more than ever. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on the float, to all the spectators who cheered us on and waved Ukrainian and Pride flags, and to everyone who stopped to show their support along the route.
